Physically-challenged Development Foundation (PDF), University of Dhaka organized a day-long “Leadership Training on Inclusive Society and Scribe Award Ceremony-2018” on Saturday. Every year, PDF, DU organizes such leadership trainings and workshops in order to promote active citizenship and to convey the message of inclusive society among the young learners of higher educational institutions.
There were two segments: ‘Leadership Training on Inclusive Society’ held from 9 AM to 4 PM, and the ‘Scribe (Writer) Award Ceremony-2018’ held later the evening to recognize the writers who attended in the examinations for the students with visually impaired (SWVIs). The program was organized with three specific issues. These are awareness raising about Disability, Accessibility, Disability Rights and Writer for the Visually Impaired, to develop the Leadership Capacity of the Students and Students with Disabilities of University of Dhaka and to convey the Message of Inclusive Society and Inclusive Education. The event took place in Habibullah Conference Hall, Faculty of Business Studies of University of Dhaka.
Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof Dr Md. Akhtarruzaaman attended as Chief Guest, Prof Dr CR Abrar, Prof Dr Mosharraf Hossain and Mizanur Rahman Kiron, Founder and President of PDF was the special guest. Md. Tawohidul Haque, Assistant Professor of ISWR, DU presided over the program. Tanjim Ferdous, In-Charge, Partnership Management, The Daily Star; Makshud Manik, Co-founder, Youth Opportunities; Fatimatul Botul, Master Facilitator, British Council Bangladesh; Tamim Mahmud from Telco Distribution Company were the trainers of ‘leadership training on Inclusive Society’ segment. In his speech, Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman said, “Our real disabilities aren’t physical, rather they lie in our thoughts and attitudes. We have to change our minds & actions for the betterment of the society”. He also emphasized on to spread these social activities with disability issues amoung the whole part of society.
Tawohidul Haque thanked the guests, participants and organizers in his presiding speech and said, “Every person faces challenges in their lives. We should respect them for being the ‘people with challenges’, rather than simply labelling them as disabled. If we want to make a society for all, we have to bring them to the mainstream.”
It is to be noted that there were training sessions on various issues related to inclusive society and leadership such as Disability Orientation, Leadership with Compassion, Thinking about Purpose, Youth Leadership and Disability Issues, Strategies to transform every opportunity into success and leadership skills, tips and processes, disability orientation, voluntarism through leadership, essentials for an inclusive society, policy advocacy for inclusive society. Over 180 students, including students with disabilities, attended the training program. PDF, DU one of the branches of Physically-challenged Development Foundation (PDF), which is a registered non-profit voluntary youth and student-based organization, is working relentlessly for the overall development of the students with disabilities in DU.
