Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) has threatened to start a non-cooperation movement from May 1 next year if the government does not take any effective measures to implement the roadmap of the CHT peace accord by this time.
“We will stage demonstrations during the non-cooperative movement. However, it will depend on time and situation,” PCJSS Chairman Jyotirindria Bodhipriya Larma, better known as Santu Larma, said at a press conference at Sundarbans Hotel at Karwan Bazar in the city on Saturday, marking the 17th anniversary of the CHT Peace Accord.
The then Awami League government and PCJSS signed the peace treaty on December 2, 1997, which
recognises the rights of the ethnic communities of Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Santu Larma went on: “Seventeen years have passed after signing of the deal. Our aspiration was that both hill people and Bangalees would be able to form an institutional system on their own for changing their lots. But the problems have not yet been solved politically and peacefully.”
The PCJSS leader alleged that the government has been giving false assurance to the indigenous people. “Instead of implementing the fundamental issues of the accord, the government is carrying on propaganda through disseminating false, confusing and imaginary information in this regard,” he said.
“CHT issue is a national and political problem. In fact, the peace agreement had been signed considering overall interest. So, it’s the government’s responsibility to implement it,” Santu Larma said.
