Staff Reporter :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Sunday said that the people, who used to question the anti-militant drives, were actually instigating militancy.
The IGP said this after some civil society leaders suggested law enforcers to conduct the drives responsibly so that the militants are not killed during the drives.
He said this in a program organised in honour of the families of police officials, who died during the recent anti-militant drives in Sylhet at Police Headquarters on Sunday.
The IGP said that they saw some political leaders to deliver irresponsible speeches questioning our anti-militant raids, but the countrymen have unequivocally rejected their remarks.
Since the last year’s Gulshan attack, around 45 militants, including women and children linked to Neo JMB, were killed in raids across the country, while the law enforcers were able to arrest 13 persons only alive, he claimed.
Their remarks did nothing but fuelled militancy. So we are urging all not to make unwanted remarks when the whole nation is united against militancy,” the IGP said.
Thanking people for their supports during anti-militancy drives, the IGP said, “We will continue our drives against militants with the support and company of the people.”
He said the country will remember the contributions of Lieutenant Colonel Abul Kalam Azad, Assistant Police Commissioner Md Rabiul Islam, Officer-in-Charge Salauddin and Constable Ansarul, who were killed during different anti-militancy drives recently.
The IGP also recalled the contributions of Chowdhury Mohammad Abu Kaiser, 50, and Monirul Islam, 39, who were killed during the drive at Atiya Villa in Shibbari of Sylhet.
Later, the IGP handed Saving Certificates worth Taka 20 lakh and Taka four lakh in cash to each of the families of Abu Kaiser and Monirul Islam.
Besides, Sylhet Metropolitan Police also handed two cheques worth Tk four lakh each to the two families.
Additional IGP of Police Headquarters (HRM) Md Moinur Rahman, DMP Commissiner Asaduzzaman Mia and Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Golam Kibria, among others, addressed the function. Other senior officials were present.
