UNB, Dhaka :Patients in hospitals across the country underwent immense suffering amid the nationwide power blackout on Saturday. Many emergency surgeries had to be postponed in public hospitals while patients admitted to wards had to endure suffocation as the internal power generation capacities of the hospitals could only give back-up power to emergency units and intensive care units. At Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the country’s main public hospital, surgeries were conducted in all but one operation theaters until the evening.Authorities of the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) had to halt all its services as the generator of the hospital failed to provide enough back-up following the unusual power outage. In Rangpur Medical College Hospital where at least 60 surgeries are carried out every day, not a single surgery could be conducted in any of the operation theatres.According to UNB Khulna and Rajshahi correspondents, no surgery could be done in the operation theatres of Khulna Medical College Hospital and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. At Chittagong Medical College Hospital, surgeries were performed in one operation theatre while the rest of the hospital, except its ICU and emergency unit, faced power outage. However, at Barisal Medical College and Hospital, the power supply was restored by 4pm as a local grid producing 1.5 MW of electricity remained operational and supplied the electricity to the hospital.
