Syed Shemul Parvez :
There is no end to the sufferings of patients under treatment in the state-owned hospitals including Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for shortages of physicians.
It was seen on the spot that hundreds of patients were receiving treatment on the hospital floors and corridors of DMCH, which is painful, unhealthy and unhygienic when special care is very much necessary.
The similar pathetic situation prevails in most of the state-owned hospitals in the country.
The Neurosurgery Department of DMCH has about 50 beds, whereas 200 patients were seen on the floors and corridors of the department.
When contacted, Morsheda Begum, mother of a patient named Farida Khatun and resident of Gazipur district, told the New Nation that “I have been here at the hospital to receive treatment for my daughter. In fact as a guardian, I have become very frustrated about the proper treatment of my child. Though doctor fixed the dates of spine operation of my child several times, but no operation has yet been done.
As a result, passing long time in the bed, serious back sore developed in my child.
When attention of the duty nurses was drawn, they said we now nothing to the operation. Doctors will give decision regarding the issue, victim Morsheda added.
After that when we visited the director room of DMCH with the allegation, the director ordered the staff to look into the matter, but no progress was done, she said.
I am a garment worker, working at a Gazipur factory. But in last one and half months I couldn’t attend my office because of my sickness, Morsheda added.
Requesting not to be named, a patient told The New Nation that they are regular patients of DMCH. The very common thing is that doctors rare come to visit the patients everyday despite having mount of patients.
Besides, the behaviour of duty nurses is not decent at all, he added.
According to DMCH sources, insufficient number of doctors have to face such a big number of patients in this hospital everyday. It is one of the main reasons of patient’s sufferings.
Scarcity of beds, medical staff and technicians also add to the sufferings of patients, sources added.
Mohammad Nazmul Haque, Director of Dhaka Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), couldn’t be reached despite repeated calls last night.
It is mentionable that immense sufferings frustrate the outdoor patients of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital everyday, where around 2500 patients visit the hospital.
