Outbreaks of high fever, bronchiolitis and diarrhoea have been reported in children during this time of hot and cold weather. Besides, there is pneumonia. The number of children infected with these diseases has increased several times compared to other times. There is no place for children in the children’s ward of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital.
In a bed crisis, three to four children have to be treated in one bed. The total number of beds in the child health department is a little over one hundred. But the number of pediatric patients admitted in the department for the last several days is not less than five hundred. As many as three to four times more patients are admitted in this department than in the beds.
Ward doctors say the entire hospital admits between 2,500 and 3,000 patients daily. Of these, the number of patients admitted in the child health department alone is more or less five hundred. As one-fifth of the total patients of the hospital are admitted in the child health department. Although the total wards in the hospital is not less than 40. The bed crisis has been manifested in the pediatric department as the patient’s pressure is increasing day by day.
 According to the Child Health Department, more than 500 pediatric patients have been undergoing treatment for the last few days against the total 132 beds of the department including four special units. The doctors in charge of the ward said that the number of patients suffering from fever, shortness of breath, pneumonia and diarrhoea was higher among the admitted pediatric patients.
