Youngster Parvez Hossain Emon became the fastest T20 centurion of Bangladesh, eliminating Tamim Iqbal after bringing up his century off just 42 balls.
Playing for Fortune Barishal which is led by Tamim Iqbal, Emon’s feat came against Minister Group Rajshahi in Bangabandhu T20 Cup at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
His century enabled Barishal to gun down a gigantic 220-7 with such ease that 11 balls were remaining in the match.
This was also the highest chase for any T20 team of Bangladesh. Earlier Bangladesh national team held the record of highest chasing by Bangladeshi T20 team when they gunned down Sri Lanka’s 214 in a T20 International game.
Emon, who is the member of Bangladesh Under-19 World Cup winning team, smashed nine fours and seven sixes in his 42 ball-100 not out.
Tamim earlier hit fastest T20 100 by a Bangladeshi batsman when he smashed a 50 ball-century for Comilla Victorians during his 61 ball-141 not out against Dhaka Dynamites in BPL 2019. Tamim also struck 11 sixes, the most by a Bangladeshi batsman in that match, which was equaled by Nazmul Hossain Shanto in this match.
Shanto earlier came close twice, including this match, to break Tamim’s record. He firstly came close to breaking the record in January this year in Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) when he was playing for Khulna Tigers in a match against Dhaka Platoon. He smashed a 51 ball-century during his 57 ball-115 runs knock and thereby failed to break the record.
Again he came close to breaking the record during the match against Minister Group Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal today. In front of Tamim who leads the Barishal side, Shanto started such carnage that he came close to grabbing the record but he missed it again.
However he completed the century off 52 balls, making it the fourth fastest century by a Bangladeshi batsman.
But Emon didn’t miss the chance. He turned his maiden century as the fastest century by a Bangladeshi batsman eventually.
West Indies’s Chirs Gayle currently holds the record of fastest T20 century, which came off just 30 balls. South Africa’s David Miller and India’s Rohit Sharma however remain joint fastest T20 centurion in International T20 cricket, smashing the century of just 35 balls.
