Speakers at a seminar called for implementation of the ‘Transforming our World-The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)’ ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
They demanded to form a participatory and Inclusive National Implementation (INI) committee for adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to be held from 25-27 September 2015.
Addressing at Meet the Press on Transforming our World-The 2030 Agenda for SDG in the city on Friday, the speakers said the United Nations (UN) undertakes new development framework that will be adopted in 25-27 September 2015 through its 70th General Assembly, as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ended in September 2015.
They highlighted that a majority of people are living in the extreme poverty condition though MDGs is being reached to end while many of the goals would not be fully met by 2015.
The speakers urged a sustainable agenda for the world based in equality and redistributive justice for all enshrined by human rights.
Ahmed Swapan Mahmud, executive director of VOICE read out the keynote paper and said that a commitment is required to start implementation of the 2030 Agenda at national, sub-national and local levels.
Alison Subrata Baroi, director of Campaign for Good Governance (Supro) said a positive allocation of funds and financial resources is essential for a participatory, transparent and inclusive implementation of the SDGs. The leaders must ensure that national and local resources are allocated to the implementation of the SDGs, he said.
Governments must prioritize sustainable development investment, especially in pro-poor infrastructure and utilities, which starts with the needs of the poorest and most marginalized people, ensuring that program success indicators are linked directly with positive impacts, he added.
CPRD executive director, Shamsuddoha said the government must create opportunities for real dialogue between people about the implementation of the Post-2015 agenda.
A national watch group on SDGs comprising civil society members, professional bodies, academicians, rights groups etc, will be formed soon after the UNGA to look after the progress of the implementation and monitoring activities on SDGs by the government, said the organizer.
