NGO Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS) organised a discussion meeting at CSS Ava center on the occasion of International Youth Day 2016 recently .
The theme for this year of the Day was “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production,” with a special focus on SDG 12. In focus of this theme, key note paper of the discussion session were presented by Dr. Abdullah Abusayed Khan, Associate Professor, Sociology Discipline of Khulna University. In his presentation Mr. Khan said that, one third of our total population are youth, so no development can be sustain without the involvement of young generation.
The engagement and participation of youth is inevitable to achieve sustainable human development, rapid growth and prosperity, but because of the lack of opportunities it is often hardly accomplished.
He mentioned that we should make a platform for our young generation to take active part in the decision-making at all levels. In his keynote paper he recommended that youth are the future leader of our nation. Proper initiatives and financial allocation is essential for their educational and technological improvement. In addition that we should ensure education and training facilities for disable youths for their employment opportunities. Youths will also prepare a roadmap for social movement against terrorism, religious conflict, drug addiction and cultural barrier.
In this discussion session Mr. Sheikh Abdul Hamid, Deputy Director, Department of Social Service, said that more effort are needed to raise awareness about the importance of youth civic engagement and its benefits to the individuals and to society, including for sustainable development as well as resilience and well-being.
