The Rohingya settlements have depleted over 8,000 acres of reserved forest in Cox’s Bazar and the damage is equivalent to a loss of over Tk 2,420 crore.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry revealed this at a meeting held in the conference room of the Cox’s Bazar
Deputy Commissioner Office on Friday, with its Chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair.
Expressing serious concern over the damage, the parliamentary watchdog has recommended that an expert team should assess the loss and damage of environment and biodiversity in Cox’s Bazar that was caused by shelters created for the Rohingya population.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin and Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar were present at the meeting, along with the committee’s other members Jafar Alam, Md Rezaul Karim Bablu and Khodeja Nasrin Akter, and other government officials concerned, said an official press release.
During the meeting, they discussed their visit to the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, and the environmental loss as well as the damage occurred by sheltering the Rohingyas in the coastal district.
They also suggested taking steps to supply safe water to the refugees.
The parliamentary body also recommended submitting the details of the achievements of Clean Air and Sustainable Environment (CASE) Project to its next meeting.
