State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki called upon the parents to be more cautious about the rights of their children.
“The government has taken many steps to promote and protect the rights of the children, but parents also need to be more careful and sincere about the rights of their children,” the state minister said.
She said this on Thursday while inaugurating the week-long programmes for the World Children Day and the Child Rights Week at the city’s Shishu Academy premises.
Chumki noted with distress that many children are still being abused at homes despite the strong commitment of the government to protect them from all odds.
She pointed out that the government has undertaken various income generating programmes and activities for reducing poverty, but there are many parents who are engaging their children in works at home which is unfortunate.
Chumki said the government has also initiated programmes for street children, but they are not responding properly to these initiatives.
Against this backdrop, the state minister urged cooperation from the parents so the rights of the children could be protected accordingly.
Women and Children Affairs Secretary Nasima Begum and Director of Shishu Academy Mosharraf Hossian also spoke on the occasion.
