Papya cultivation has gained popularity in Narsingdi district due to higher economic prospect of the crop.
A good number of farmers particularly the youths in the six upazilas of the district have also involved themselves in commercial cultivation of papaw during the last 10 years and achieved economic self-reliance.
Papya is a delicious and nutritious fruit. The green papaw is also a nutritious vegetable. The papaw tree grow abundantly on sandy and loamy soil. Farmers usually cultivate papaw on the high lands and on their homestead garden.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) encouraged the farmers and given training particularly the youths to cultivate more Papya as the climate and soil of the district are suitable for papaw cultivation.
The farmers have collected the saplings directly from Agriculture Extension Department and from different private nurseries. Farmers raising a number of papaw orchards in the district every year by their own initiative with minimum financial involvement and earning handsome cash.
Papya the all season vegetable and fruit has great dement in local markets and abroad. Each kilogram green papaw are being sold Tk 20 to 25 and each ripe papaw are being sold at Tk 20 to 100according to its size.
Deputy Director DAE Narsingdi Latafut Hossain told The New Nation cultivation of papaw is more profitable then others crops. Farmers during the last ten years raised a number of orchards in the district and they are at present harvesting huge quantity of green and ripe papaw. He said 200 to 300 papaw saplings can be planted on one bigha of land and the trees after 4 to 5 months give production an average 150 to 200 mounds of papaw in a year. Each tree bear 200 to 250 papaw in a year and the tree give production up to four to fiver years.
Farmer Hafijuddin a youth of Chalakchar village of Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi district getting no job have came closer to agriculture activates and actively involved themselves in cultivating papaw. He raised a Papya garden by planting 400 saplings on 40 decimals of land two years ago only expense of Tk 20 thousand. The plans growing well and during the last two years he got excellent production from his garden. He expressed hes satisfaction for earned Tk 2,00,000 selling the green and ripe Papya.
Farmer Abu Taleb of Gashirdia village of Shibpur upazila also narrated his successful story cultivating the papaw in his 30 decimals land. He said this year he profited Tk 80,000 by selling green and ripe papaw from his garden.
