Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed on Wednesday hoped paperless trade will pave the way for attaining the country’s export target.
“Automation process is being carried out in different government offices related to export and import, and Bangladesh has decided to join the paperless trade initiative of UNESCAP,” he said.
The minister passed the remarks while addressing as a panelist a “high-level dialogue on enhancing regional trade through effective partnership in the digital economy” in Bangkok.
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) organized the dialogue.
Bangladesh has set an export target of US$ 41 billion including service sector. Last year, Bangladesh exported US$ 34.84 billion. Later, the commerce minister signed the paperless trade agreement at UNESCAP headquarters.
UNESCAP in 72th session adopted the resolution on “Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-Border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific”.
The Cabinet in August 7 took decision for Bangladesh’s partnership with the movement.
Bangladesh is the first signatory country. China and Cambodia also signed the agreement.
On August 30, the minister will travel to Sri Lanka where he has a schedule to exchange views with the country’s commerce and industry minister regarding trade, investment and signing of FTA.
Later he will join the “Second Indian Ocean Conference-2017” due to be held from August 31 to September 2 in Colombo with the participation of the representatives from 29 countries.
The commerce minister will deliver his speech in the minister’s panel of the conference on September 1. The theme of the conference is Peace, Progress and Prosperity.
On the sidelines of the conference, Tofail Ahmed will meet the ministers and policy makers of the Oceanian countries to discuss trade and investment.
