A large numbers of covid patients are rushing to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital every day for admission there.
The employees of the hospital said, most of the patients are not eligible for admision as their conditions do not give signal.
But they used to press for a bed.
“We become tired of making them understand that they really need not treatment in the hospital at all. But they request us again and again to admit them,” said one of the employees.
Preferring anonymity, he said, on average 30 patients used to come every day but we find few of them for admission in the hospital.
Official sources said the BSMMU Hospital has 551 general beds for covid patients.
It has 36 ICU beds and 20 high dependency unit (HDU) seats.
Already, it has 52 covid patients in general beds and seven of them on ICU beds while there was no patient at HDU on Thursday.
On the spot it was seen that one patient came with relatives by a ambulance at noon.
But the employees found that the patient was not severely sick.
They checked and found that the patient’s Oxygen saturation was over 95 and it was enough for normal breathing.
They asked the relatives to get back and taking medical treatment staying home.
But within hours, the relatives came back with the patient and a written recommendation from a higher official of the hospital for checking his health condition again. The employees then took the patient to a concern doctor again for further check-up.
The employees said it is the common scenario for last several days after identifying Omicron variant in the country.
He said, we have admitted many patients with covid like symptoms till several days ago for their better care. Most of the beds were vacant and few patients sought a seat at those days.
But nowadays, we are passing very busy time mostly making the patients and their family members understand that it is not good to stay hospital for them.
“But we have taken those patients whose Oxygen saturation was bellow 93 and has other sickness or old aged complications,” one of the employees said.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Be-Nazir Ahmed, former Director of disease control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare told The New Nation on Thursday, “Patients and relatives should not be panicked and need not go to hospital with normal covid symptoms.”
The Professor said, covid patients movement may cause more spreading of the fatal virus. Furthermore, he said, the normal patient who is not severely sick and have no other complications should stay home quarantine and take treatment there.
