Panchbibi farmers interested in mustard cultivate

Farmers in different areas of Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat have resorted to mustard cultivation as price increase of soybean oil and to meet their needs. The farmers are of the opinion that if the incentives increase, the cultivation of this crop will increase more.
According to the official decision, the Agriculture Office of the upazila has given fertilizer and seed incentives for mustard cultivation in the current season. All the lands that used to be waiting for Boro planting after harvesting Aman are now adorned with mustard flowers. Farmers in the area are smiling with joy at the prospect of bumper mustard crop.
Bishnupad, a farmer from Chak Samser village of the upazila and Farman Saharul, a farmer from Harenda Village, Ershad, who are busy tending mustard fields said they have started cultivating mustard in all the lands which used to be fallow a few years ago.
Panchbibi Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Sohrab Hossain said that the yield of Bari-14 variety of mustard is high and it takes less time. By doing this, Boro can be easily cultivated by growing mustard in these lands. And then less fertilizer has to be applied. In order to cultivate the crop, first cultivate the land lightly and sow seeds in it. Insecticides have to be applied two or three times in production.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Lutfar Rahman said there is a possibility of bumper mustard harvest this season due to favorable weather and proper care.
As part of the development programme of the present government, we are regularly advising the farmers to cultivate mustard in order to achieve self-sufficiency of edible oil in the country. He said mustard is being cultivated in 5,100 hectares of land in the upazila this season. These are three hundred hectares more than last year? Seeds and fertilizers have been provided to 14,000 farmers of the upazila under the mustard cultivation incentive this season.
