Panchagarh district town on Tuesday turned into jubilant as thousands of people celebrated the Panchagarh Freedom Day through various daylong programmes.
On this day in 1971, the freedom fighters along with hundreds of common people hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh for the first time in Panchagarh town after defeating the Pakistani occupation forces.
The district administration, district and Sadar upazila units of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS), District Sports Association and other organisations placed wreaths at the martyrs’ memorial, organised victory procession, discussion and cultural function marking the Day.
Led by Member of the Parliament (MP) from Panchagrh-1 constituency Nazmul Hoque Prodhan, freedom fighters, government officials, students, teachers and socio-cultural and professional activists participated in the procession that paraded streets of the town.
Later, Nazmul Hoque Prodhan, MP, attended the discussion held at Muktijoddha Complex auditorium as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Amal Krishna Mandal in the chair.
Panchagarh Zila parishad Administrator Advocate Abu Bakar Siddik, Additional District Magistrate Golam Mohammad Azam, Sadar upazila Chairman Anwar Sadat Samrat, Panchagarh pourashava Mayor Tauhidul Islam addressed as special guest. Commander of Panchagarh district unit of BMS Mirja Abul Kalam Dulal, freedom fighters SM Liyakat Ali, Abdul Mazid Babul, Ismail Hossain, Waisul Quraeshi and many others narrated heroism of the freedom fighters in liberating Panchagarh on November 29 in 1971.
They said that the freedom fighters and allied forces intensified attacks on the Pakistani occupation army since November from three sides of the then Panchagarh Thana headquarters and started capturing one after another enemy camps.
“We captured Amarkhana camp of the occupation forces on November 20, Jagdalhat on November 25, Shingpara on November 26, Talma on November 27, and CO Office, Atwari, and Mirzapur camps on November 28,” said freedom fighter Jahirul Islam.
The chief guest said that the Pakistani occupation forces had to retreat from Panchagarh town on November 28 at night and took shelter at Syedpur Cantonment in the face of fierce attacks by the freedom fighters and allied forces.
