It was so close but yet so far as Bangladesh Under-19 suffered a tragic one wicket defeat against Pakistan in their last group B third match of the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup held on Sunday at the Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka.
Chasing a moderate target of 231 to win, Pakistan’s top five batted very sensibly to take initial control of the match putting 200 for lost of four wickets at the end of 40 overs. Opener Mohammad Ziad Alam and Mohsin Khan provided a perfect platform as they put superb 86 runs for the first wicket partnership in 13.3 overs.
A smart fielding saw Bangladesh broke the first wicket stand as Ziad was run out for a superb 50 off 32 deliveries with eight boundaries and one six. Mohsin with 30, Abdullah Shafique with 29, skipper Nasir Nawaz with responsible 45, Zaryab Asif with 33 kept Pakistani run chase on a comfortable pace.
But Bangladesh bowlers bounced back and claimed wickets five for 15 runs with three run outs to reduce Pakistan for 201 for 4 to 216 for 9.
Saad Khan kept his cool and found number 11 batsman Muhammad Hasnian to help him score priceless 18runs for unfinished tenth wicket stand to give Pakistan an incredible one wicket win over Bangladesh. Saad remained not out with 18 runs laced with a valuable sixer.
Afif Hossain with 2 for 31 and Shakhawat Hossain with 2 for 43 were the leading Bangladesh bowlers.
Earlier Pakistani captain Nasir Nawaz won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first.
