A new prosecution witness (PW) on Wednesday submitted his deposition against Mawlana Abdus Subhan,
accusing the incumbent nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami of ordering the killing of Mazid during the War of Liberation. Akkas Sheikh, 65, of village Varara under Pabna Sadar police station, testified against Subhan as PW-16 at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2.
“Pakistani troops guided by Subhan raided our village on the morning of 5 Jaiyshtha (Bengali month)in 1971. They detained many men including my brother, grandfather and uncle and took them in front of Varara mosque. There Subhan made the detainees to stand in two lines. People which supported Awami League were made to stand in a line separate,” the witness said.
“Subhan started calling names of the people from a list. As Mazid responded to the call of Subhan, he ordered the army to shoot him. The troops shot and killed Mazid on the spot. They took the rest of the detainees to Nurpur army camp, where my brother was killed,” Akkas added.
After his deposition, advocate Mizanul Islam, counsel for Subhan, cross-examined him and then the tribunal adjourned the hearing till June 29.
Subhan, 77, was indicted on December 31, 2013, on 9 counts of crimes against humanity by the ICT-1. On March 27, 2014, the ICT-1 transferred the case to the ICT-2 for quick disposal.
