Different public and private universities/ institutions including Dhaka University (DU), University, Rajshahi University (RU), Comilla University (CoU), Daffodil International University (DIU), Southeast University (SEU), BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) celebrated Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla calendar year 1422, amid traditional festivities and great enthusiasm on Tuesday.
The Mughal Emperor Akbar started this calendar year on 10 March 1585, but it came into effect from 16 March, 1586, the day of his ascension to the throne. The renowned scholar and astronomer, Fatehullah Shiraji was entrusted with the task of creating the new Bangla year, so that the farmers were not hard pressed to pay their taxes out of the crop season.
Dhaka University: Dhaka University (DU) observed Pahela Baishakh with theme of this year’s programme was ‘Shanti Manabota o Manusher Odhiker’.
Students of the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, wearing colourful masks, brought out a ‘Mangal Shobhajatra (procession of good wishes)’ as part of the festival from the main gate of the institute around 9 am. Several hundred people also joined the procession. This year, the theme of the procession was ‘Onek alo jalate hobe moner ondhokare’. The procession, led by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, ended at the Institute of Fine Arts after parading Ruposhi Bangla Hotel intersection.
Rajshahi University: Pahela Baishakh was celebrated through age old traditional events, customs, festivity and great enthusiasm at Rajshahi University (RU) campus on Tuesday. The programmes included colorful rally, Baishakhi fair, Chaittra Shankranti, music soiree, rendering of folk songs, art and painting competition and recitation of poems were staged on the campus. The whole university wore a festive look and decorated with different format as most of the department chalked out elaborate programmes separately at a lot of places on the campus while an air of festivity was especially felt around fine arts department of the university. The university authority led by its vice chancellor Prof Mohammad Mizanuddin Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Register Entazul Haque brought out a colorful procession at 9:00am while Fine Arts department also brought out Mangal Shovajatra with the presence of university authority.
Comilla University: Comilla University was observed Pahela Baishakh amid traditional festivities and great enthusiasm on 14 April, 2015 at the campus premises.
Singing of `Esho hey Baishakh esho esho’ everywhere in the Comilla University (CoU) gave the day really a festive dimension. To welcome the New Year with good spirits, the teachers, students, and other officials of the University gathered and brought out a colorful procession “Mangal Sobhajatra” led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Ali Ashraf. A large number of students, faculty members, and administrative staffs were joined the rally with balloons, festoons, masks and icons.
Daffodil International University: Students of Daffodil International University (DIU) celebrated Pahela Baishakh with “Baishakh Parbone” to hail the New Year 1422 with new hopes and aspirations for a better, peaceful year. Sponsored by Roxy Paint Limited, the day long events included “Auspicious white paint on the street” (Alpona Utshob’), Mongal Shavajatra, flying paper- balloon, eating water rice with Hilsha and traditional cultural program like Puthi path, song, dance, poetry etc.
Southeast University: Southeast University (SEU) celebrated Pahela Baishakh to hail the New Year 1422 with new hopes and aspirations for a better, peaceful year.
On the occasion of Bengali New Year and Pahela Baishakh, SEU organized a day-long festival at its Permanent Campus. Vice Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain inaugurated the festival, while Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Humayun Kabir Chowdhury will preside over the inaugural ceremony.
