Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New year 1426, was celebrated on Sunday with much enthusiasm. Netrakona district administration and different socio-cultural organizations and professional groups and educational institutions chalked out various colorful programs marking the day.
The day’s program began with singing of traditional song of the Pahela Baishakh “Eso, Hey Baishakh-Eso Eso” by the school children at Netrakona Mukto-Mona-Moncha on the premises of old collectorate office in the morning.
A Mongal Subajatra joined by the people from all walks of life including student of different educational institutions and cultural activists was brought out in the town in the morning.
State minister for fisheries and livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Habiba Rahman Khan Shafali, MP, deputy commissioner Main-Ul-Islam and police super Joydeb Chowdhory led the rally.
An art and song competition and cultural function were held on the premises of old collectorate office in the morning under the auspices of the district administration.
Traditional Baishakhi food-items were served among the local people at the Mukto-Mona-Moncha by the district administration.
Besides, traditional Baishakhi food-items were served among the inmates of jails, hospitals and government orphanage family centers in the district.
A colorful cultural show was arranged at the Birisiri Kudro Nri Gustee (ethnic community) cultural academy at Durgapur upazila of the district by the artistes of the academy.
BSS from Gaibandha reports : Pahela Baishakh, first day of Bengali New Year-1426, was celebrated in all the seven upazilas of the district as elsewhere in the country on Sunday with much enthusiasm and traditional festivities.
Marking the day in a befitting manner district and upazila administrations, different educational institutions and socio-cultural organizations including Gaibandha Press Club chalked out the elaborate programmes separately.
In the morning, a function on feeding panta bhat with fried hilsha, chili, pata shak, shutki bharta was held at the bungalow of deputy commissioner (DC) of the town where district level officials, leaders of different professional groups, cultural personalities and town elite, including journalists participated spontaneously.
Later, a Mongal Shobhajatra led by whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini at the arrangement of district administration was brought out from Independence Square and ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the town.
The programme was followed by a discussion meeting at the stage of Independence Square where whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, police super Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, district unit, Abu Bakar Siddique and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah
Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon addressed, among others while DC Abdul Matin presided over the function.
Later, a cultural function was also held welcoming the Bengali New Year Eso Hey Baishakh Eso Eso. Baishakhi Mela was held side by side with quiz competition on the premises of Independence Square.
Improved diets were distributed to the jail inmates and the children ofGovt. Shishu Paribars.
Traditional Halkhata was also held at the arrangement of the businessmen in haats-bazars, groceries, sales centers and important places in both rural and urban areas distributing sweets among their customers.
The zila police adopted tight security measures to ensure law and order for peaceful celebrations of the day, said additional police super Rahaat Gowhary.
Talking to the correspondent of the national news agency, DC Abdul Matin said the district got festive mood as the Pahela Baishakh was celebrated through active participation of the people from all walks of life.

Children, youths, men, women and activists of the socio-cultural, voluntary and professional organisations wearing traditional dresses came out on the streets after sunrise to welcome the Bengali New Year.
Besides, hundreds of men, women and children, in traditional colourful clothes, thronged Rajshahi College playground, Fudkipara open stage, Shishu Academy, Riverview Collect-orate School playground and other venues especially the bank of the river Padma for celebrations of the occasion.
The programmes of the day heralded in the city by inaugurating a colourful “Mongol Shobhajatra” on Collegiate School premises. Rajshahi district administration arranged the rally.
After parading some of the city streets, the rally ended at the Riverview Collect-orate School premises where a two-day “Baishakhi, Children Amusement Fair”, cultural function and blood donation programme were formally opened.
Divisional Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman, Deputy Inspector General of Police AKM Hafiz Akter, RMP Commissioner Humayun Kabir, Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader and Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah were present in the opening programme.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) arranged a daylong celebration programmes. Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton attended many of the programmes.
Cultural groups and different organisations including Sammillita Sangskritik Jote arranged various programmes like musical functions, bcolourful marches and street side Baishakhi fairs in the city.
They brought out Baishakhi processions in the city streets carrying colourful festoons, placards and banners and singing Baishakhi songs, Palli Geeti, Gambhira, Jarigan, Bhatiali, Baul, Lalon Geeti, Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet and other folk and classical songs.
Baishakhi Melas, cultural functions, staging of dramas, doll-dances, Nagor Dola, kite flying competitions and discussions meeting were also arranged throughout the day.
Various other educational institutions including Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi College and Rajshahi Medical College also celebrated the festival through separate daylong programmes.
Faculty of Fine Arts in Rajshahi University along with university administrative officials, brought out a colorful rally titled Mongol procession around 9:30am in front of the faculty building.
They have also arranged a three day-long programmes of folk songs gambhira dance, band music and jatra pala at the university Charu Chattar to celebrate Pahela Baishakh of the Bengali New Year-1426.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies adopted all-out tightened security measures to make the daylong celebration a total success.
