Dakkhin Paka, Majhipara, Bhutpara villages of Paka union and Mononohorpur Kuppara village of Durlovpur union in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district are under the threat of massive erosion due to rising water of the Padma River.
At least 250 houses, 23,000 bighas of crop lands, three mosques and a school were devoured under the river in the last four days.
Hundreds of establishments on the both sides of the river are also under the threat of erosion, locals said.
Imroz Ali who lives on the river bank said, “Massive erosion has been continuing there for the last 15 days. Almost one and half bighas of my paddy field have been devoured. I borrowed Tk 30,000 from NGO to cultivate paddy. But I could not harvest.”
Organising secretary of Human Rights Commission of Shibganj upazila Al Amin Jewel said that his house is at Paka union. The local people of the union are in distress. About 300 houses have been eroded.
Acting Sub-divisional Engineer of Chapainawabganj Water Development Board Moizuddin said, “Almost 23,000 bighas of land of Paka union and Durlovpur union under Shibganj upazila have already been eroded under the river bed. The commoners are now in plight having lost their homes and crop land”.
However, “We have sent report to the respective departments after visiting the erosion prone area”, he added.
