Padma erosion hits Naria again

150 meters area collapsed, panic rises among locals

Around 150 meters area of Naria upazila protection dam has been collapsed again due to aggressive erosion of the Padma River in Shariatrpur district in the last two days.
According to locals, more than 20 establishments, including a mosque, 5 business centres and houses, have been washed away by the consequences of the river erosion. Even the furious river is threatening more areas.
The erosion began in Kederpur Union of Naria upazila on last Thursday. After the incident, panic arises among the locals seriously in the affected area. Around 100 inhabitants of the riverbank have been shifted from the spot instantly.
Mohammad Golam Mawla of Shariatpur Pani Unnayn Board told the media that the water level of the Padma is increasing every day. Due to having huge current in the river, around 150 miters area of North Kederpur in Naria upazila has been collapsed in the last two days.
Nargis Begum, an affected woman, said that last year they lost their one three-story building due to the river erosion but this time they lost everything. “Now we can’t make any decision where we will go?
One businessman of Naria Tariqul Islam Rubel told The New Nation that they did not expect such incident what happened on Thursday. “Our MP and Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim did a lot to protect the affected area through building the protection dam last year.” After the incident, the deputy minister also visited the spot instantly, he said.
Joyonti Rupa Roy, UNO of Naria upazila, told the media that the damage occurred due to collapse of the protection dam. But we are trying to know the fact why it was collapsed, she added.
Hafez Mawlana Mohammad Ali, Head Teacher of Mulfatganj Madrasha told The New Nation that their institution is not far from the affected area. “So if the government does not take instant initiative, we may also become victim of the erosion.
It is to be noted that last year, more than 6,000 houses, around 1,000 business centres, and many other establishments were washed away due to devastating erosion of the Padma River in Naria upazila.
