The much-awaited Padma Bridge will be opened for vehicular movement by June 2022, as 97 percent work of the main bridge has already been completed.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the announcement while speaking at a review meeting on the progress of the Padma Multiple Bridge Project at the Bridge Division conference room on Sunday.
He said, the overall progress of the project covers around 92 percent.
“About 65.68 percent of carpeting work of the main bridge has already been completed. Besides, 97 percent work of the main bridge has been completed, while river regulation work is 90.50 percent,” O. Quader, also the Awami League General Secretary, said.
Besides, the road transport and bridges minister said, the gas line installation work has been completed by 99 percent, and 400 KVA power line installation work by 79 percent.
Chaired by Bridge Division Secretary Md Monjur Hossain, the meeting was attended, among others, by Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam and Project Director Md Shafiqul Islam.
The 6.15-kilometre long Bridge’s roadway is now visible between Mawa point in Munshiganj and Janjira point in Shariatpur.
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge project authorities in August completed installing the roadway slabs on the bridge to connect the capital with 21 southwestern districts of Bangladesh.
It took more than six and a half years to complete the work of setting up the roadway slabs on the road-cum-rail bridge across the River Padma after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had inaugurated the construction work in December 2015.
