The Rapid Action Battalion made an arrest in the case filed over the fatal speedboat crash on the Padma River on May 3.
Chandu Molla, one of the owners of the speedboat was arrested late on Saturday, RAB’s Legal and Media wing Director Khandaker Al Moin said on Sunday.
“Speedboat owner Chandu, one of the accused in the case, was on the run since the incident. He has been arrested him from Dhaka’s Keraniganj,” he said.
As many as 26 people lost their lives when a Banglabazar-bound speedboat from Shimulia ferry terminal rammed into a sand-laden bulk carrier near the Kathalbari ferry terminal.
Five people, including the speedboat’s pilot Shah Alam, were rescued alive and sent to the hospital. Alam is now being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in police custody.
The case started by the Kathalbari river police unit over the case names Alam, speedboat owners Chandu Molla and Rezaul, and the lessee of the speedboat wharf Shah Alam Khan.
The Ministry of Shipping and the Madaripur district administration has opened separate inquiries over the crash.
