Paddy, rice price on down trend in Rajshahi region

With government’s interventions, including the introduction of open market sale of rice in the city and its vicinity, the price of both paddy and rice is now on the down trend in the region.
In a span of week, the rice price has been decreased by Taka two to three per kg while paddy price by Taka 100 to 150 per mound.
Joynal Haque, a wholesale trader at Nawhata Bazar, said paddy was sold at Taka 1,200 to 1,250 per mound on Thursday whereas the price was Taka 1,300 to 1,400 one week back. Rice price was also high at that time.
Wholesalers at Kumarpara and Kadirgonj rice markets said after declining the price by Taka two to three in week span LC rice is now being sold at Taka 46, gut swarna at Taka 46, 28 at Taka 52 and miniket at Taka 56 per kilogram.
They expected that the price will go down furthermore. Meanwhile, open market sale of rice has been started through dealers in every upazilas to control the price hike.
President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman blamed that a greedy business syndicate has hiked the price through creating artificial crises with the hope of extra benefit. The government has started taking legal action against them through proper investigation.
District administration has started mobile court operation against hoarding of rice in the district including the city.
On Monday last, the administration conducted a mobile court at four rice mills at BSCIC industrial estate and detected a stock of around 5,500 sacks of paddy and rice with two of the mills.
The court picked owners of Aslam Rice Mill Aslam Toha and manage of Ha- Meem Agro Food Faisal Hossain to the deputy commissioner’s office.
They were fined Taka 50,000 and Taka 30,000 respectively on charge of hoarding additional rice and paddy. Upon payment of the fines, they were released.
Food Officer Abdur Rahim told journalists that many of the rice mills are operating their business without license. So, they are hoarding rice and paddy illegally. He said 322 mills have license in the district.
The mills having no license are accused of creating artificial crisis through hoarding additional rice and paddy.
To halt the malpractice, district administration will conduct mobile court at all mills and other rice manufacturing enterprises in phases, he added.
Knowledge on ICT for bankers stressed
Speakers at a programme said bankers should acquire knowledge on computer and ICT applications for enhancing their professional efficiency. They said no banker can attain professional success without gaining knowledge on basic computing, banking software and proper applications.
They made the observation at a closing and certificate-giving ceremony of a five-day training course titled “Basic Computing and Banking Software” held here yesterday afternoon.
Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) organised the course at its central computer laboratory.
A total of 36 branch managers and other designated officers joined the course.
Main objective of the course was to making the branch managers and other officers concerned competent and efficient in computer software and its applications.
RAKUB Managing Director Muin Uddin addressed the session as the chief guest with Principal of its training institute Ataur Rahman in the chair.
Senior Faculty Member Md Arifuzzaman and Course Coordinator Nazbul Haque also spoke on the occasion.
Muin Uddin said large-scale promotion and application of ICT is very important towards making the banking services time-fitting and client- friendly in the present era of globalisation.
