The price of paddy in Bhangura upazila’s Hat-bazar of Pabna dropped by Tk. 60 per maund. The incident took place at Saratnagar Hat in Bhangura upazila of Pabna on Wednesday (June 1). The price of 40kgs of paddy was sold at Tk1160 in this upazila on Tuesday. But on Wednesday the price of that paddy fell by Tk .60 per kg that was bought and sold for Tk1100.
Alamgir Hossain, a paddy trader in Saratnagar market, said, “There is a lot of new paddy in the market. The buyers have suddenly decreased the price on Wednesday.”
Zahurul Islam, owner of Mill-Chatal, said that a team from the Upazila Administration had brought out on a mission to curb illegal stockpiling. That’s why the price is a bit low.
Aynal Haque, a farmer from Magura village, said, “I have harvested paddy with a daily wage of Tk.1000 per worker due to the early floods.” As a result, the cost of production has gone up. Therefore, if the price goes down, Krishak Bank will not be able to repay the loan, he said.
Upazila Food Controller Ainin Afroz said the government has fixed the price of Ekmon paddy at Tk 1,080 and directed to purchase it directly from farmers. But the stockholders increase the price for binding.
UNO Mohammad Nahid Hasan Khan said that, surveillance would be intensified to take action against those who created artificial crisis by storing paddy and rice. If necessary, mobile court will be conducted in the hat-bazaar.
