Entertainment Report :Theatre Folk, an Oxford-based theatre troupe, had arrived in the country to stage a play titled “Jamuna” centred on the Liberation War heroines at two venues in Dhaka.The troupe, formed by the expatriate Bangladeshi students in the UK along with some foreign artistes, staged the play at the Natmandal in Dhaka University premises on January 9 and 10. Another two show will be performed at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 6:30pm on January 11 and 12.Desh Natok and BotTala, the two local troupes, have jointly invited Theatre Folk to stage the play in Bangladesh. The English play “Jamuna” is written by Selina Shelly and directed by MA Haider. The play is inspired by the true story of war heroine and also noted sculptor Ferdousi Priyobhasini.The protagonist of the play joins the Liberation War of 1971 at an early age and is captured by the Pakistani army. She is tortured and violated by the army men in the concentration camp. The play does not have any tragic end rather depicts the courage of the women to live again as a sculptor in the society.Though actors from five different countries have acted in the play, only Bangladeshi expatriate actors will be featured in the Bangladesh staging. Selina Shelly, Manoj Hussain Shamim, Nupur, Adita, Soma, and others, are the actors of the play.”Jamuna,” which is the second production of the troupe after “Tale of Two Friends,” was premiered on April 20, 2012 at the Pegasus Theatre in Oxford.
