Mayur-2 capsize: Owner denied bail, 2 accused placed on 4-day remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected a bail petition of Mosaddek Hanif Soad, owner of Mayur-2 launch, in a case filed over the recent Buriganga launch accident that claimed at least 34 lives.
Judge of the senior judicial magistrate court of Dhaka, Fairuz Tasnim, passed the order after holding hearing on a bail petition filed by Soad’s lawyer through an email, claiming his client innocent.
Advocate Sultan Naser took part in the hearing on behalf of Soad, while Additional Public Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul represented the state.

River police unit on July 9 arrested the owner of Mayur-2 launch from the Sobhanbagh area in the capital.
Later, another Dhaka court placed Soad on a three-day remand after holding a hearing on a petition placed by investigation officer of the case, Shahidul Alam, also a Sub-Inspector of the Sadarghat river police unit seeking seven-day remand for him. After the interrogation, Soad was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on July 12.
Meanwhile, the same court sent two other accused of the case, Shipon Hawlader and Shakil Hossain, on four-day remand after hearing, said the investigation officer.
Earlier the two accused were arrested from Sutrapur area of the capital city and produced in the court by the investigation officer.

On June 29, Morning Bird, a launch from Munshiganj, capsized within seconds in the Buriganga near Farashganj terminal after it was hit by Mayur-2, a Dhaka-bound launch from Chandpur.

On June 30, Sadarghat river police station filed a case with Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station accusing Mayur-2 launch owner Mosaddek Hanif Soad and its six employees for the accident.
