A bailey bridge collapsed after a cement-laden truck hit it and fell into the waterbody in Gaibandha’s Fulchari upazila on Monday
Fire fighters recovered the body of the truck driver — Md Zahangir Mia (50) — from his vehicle around 1:30pm.
The fighters also rescued helper Md Tariqul Islam (18), and sent him to Fulchari Upazila Health Complex, said Md Ajhaul Islam, a firefighter of the fire service office at Fulchari.
The incident took place around 7:00am, when the truck was heading towards Kalibazar in Fulchari from Dhaka.
Ahsan Kabir, Executive Engineer of Gaibandha LGED, said “The bridge was in good condition but was damaged by the truck as the vehicle was carrying 784 bags of cement.”
“We will start reconstruction of the bridge from tomorrow and it will take minimum one week to open the bridge again,” he added.
