Over 800 traders have been running their business under the dilapidated and risky building of Kaliganj municipality for past 35 years. A trader was killed in 2007 when the ceiling of the traders’ shed locally known as Hatchandina was collapsed during the day time.
815 traders under the hatchandina were afraid of further collapse of the shed any time as it was declared unfit and completely damaged. But the authority concern was almost mum following the matter, alleged the traders.
They said, the local municipality constructed the hatchandina for the interest of the businessmen and consumers in 1980s. Since then no maintenance work was done although the shed started damaging a few years back.
Plaster for the roof has been falling and most of the portions were damaged long ago where the traders run their business with rice, grain, other crops, vegetables and essential commodities everyday. But no measures were taken so far to reconstruct the shed, they said.
According to them they have been informing the matter and requesting the municipality authority time and again taking necessary steps, while they were almost mum in the matter.
Jahangir Hossain Moni, general secretary of Kaliganj Hatchandni Traders association said, Ajoy Saha, a veteran vendor in Kaliganj town was killed in 2007 when he was running his business under the shed. Since then the shed was declared unfit both for the traders and consumers.
But they were compelled to run the business under the damaged and risky shed as the municipality authority did not construct any shed for the same purposes yet.
Kaliganj municipality Mayor Mokshed Ali when contacted admitted the dilapidated condition of the kitchen market shed and said, he had sent proposal to constructed a laarge and multi-storied building as commodity market at the same place long ago, which could not be furnished for want of allocation from the government. It must be constructed immediately after receiving of the fund, the mayor added.
