Ians, Srinagar :
Authorities on Monday deployed more than 4,000 security personnel to secure the venue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public rally in Srinagar.
“We are taking no chances with security on the Prime Minister’s visit to Srinagar today especially in the wake of last Friday’s terror attacks in the Valley,” a top official of the state’s security grid told IANS.
The officer also confirmed that more than 4,000 security personnel drawn from central and state security forces have been deployed on the security in and around the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, where Modi will address a BJP election rally today afternoon.
“This is in addition to security force deployment at other places in Srinagar city”, the officer said. Concertina wires have been laid at several intersections in Srinagar’s Dalgate, Sonawar, Gupkar Road and TRC Crossing to block the movement of vehicles and people towards the stadium. Cops and CRPF personnel are at each intersection to ensure that the security drill is followed to the last detail, an officer said.
In other parts of the city, motor vehicle checking points have been established by security forces for checking the vehicles moving around. The intelligence agencies and police have been directed to keep an eye on suspicious persons, the officer said.
Restrictions have also been imposed in five police station areas of Srinagar. The areas placed under restrictions fall under the jurisdiction of Rainawari, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Khanyar and Safakadal police stations.
Modi will visit the Badami Bagh cantonment headquarters of the army’s 15 corps in Srinagar before arriving at the public rally venue in the afternoon, BJP sources said here.
On Monday the separatist umbrella group, All Parties Hurriyat Conference, urged workers to go on strike in order to “send a clear message to Indian leadership that Kashmiris have never accepted the dominance and hegemony of Indian union and they would decide their political future only through right to self-determination.”
Modi was scheduled to speak at a campaign rally for his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
The rally was being held in a sports stadium – festooned with orange BJP flags and huge banners showing Modi’s face. It will be Modi’s third visit in a month, as he has been campaigning heavily in hopes of helping his party win a first-ever majority in India’s only Muslim-majority state.
