Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Monday alleged that more than two thousand leaders and activists of the party were arrested in the name of on going countrywide crackdown since Friday morning.
“The government cannot identify any militants, but they arrested a lot of innocent people in the holy month of Ramzan. The government is trying to
hide their illegal existence,” BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said this while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office.
The BNP leader said that the law enforcers are arresting common people and opposition activists in the name of suppressing terrorism and militancy.
“The government has pushed the innocent people to the oppression of police instead of identifying militants and to destroy their hid-e-outs. It’s not to stop secret killing but to suppress the opposition leaders and activists,” Rizvi said.
According to Police Headquarters, more than seven thousand people have been arrested since the crackdown started on Friday. Of them, 85 people were identified as militants. If it right, then why the government has arrested and oppressing so many people in the holy month Ramzan.
Rizvi accused the government of recklessly ignoring all the laws. “Ignoring the apex court’s order, the government is arresting people without any summons. They are violating the court’s direction,” he said.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and central leaders Bilkis Jahan Shirin, Abdus Salam Azad were also present in the briefing.
