The massive fire which broke out in city’s Rupnagar Slum on Wednesday morning has been doused after three hours of tireless efforts of Fire Service and Civil Defence teams.
According to Local sources, there were at least 3,000 shanties in the slum, of which 2000 were gutted in this conflagration.
The unfortunate residents later took shelter on the roads, while thousands have been crying for foods and water.
Fire Service Director (Operations and Maintenance) Zillur Rahman confirmed it to the media and said that the fire broke out first at a shanty of the slum around 9:40am and burnt everything it got in front for three hours.
On information, 25 firefighting units rushed to the spot and worked for almost three hours to extinguish the flame, Zillur Rahman added.
So far no news of casualties has been reported though about 50 percent of slums were razed.
Besides, a four-member committee has been formed to probe the incident and they have been told to submit the report within 10 working days.
Local lawmaker Md Elias Uddin Mollah has also assured the people of help.
Dipok Kumar Das, Inspector (Investigation) confirmed the matter to the New Nation and said that around two thousands shanties were damaged due to fatal fire incident.
Earlier this year, a woman died of her burn injuries as another massive fire gutted Chalantika Jhilpar slum, located at Mirpur 7, on Jan 24, razing at least 377 shanties to the grounds.
