Bangladesh on Thursday recorded more than 200 new coronavirus deaths for five days in a row.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 226 new deaths from Covid-19–the second highest daily count since the pandemic began–in the last 24 hours (until 8 am on Thursday), taking the total toll to 17,278.
The highest single-day deaths of 230 was reported on Sunday followed by 220 on Monday.
In the last 24 hours until 8 am on Thursday, the Covid-19 caseload surged to 1,071,774 after 12,236 people tested positive during the period, according to the latest DGHS data.
Dhaka division reported 74 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Khulna with 52 deaths.
Chittagong division counted 42 deaths while Rajshahi 24, Rangpur 13, Mymensingh 10, Barisal six, and Sylhet five.
As many as 44,941 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 27.23%. The overall test positivity rate stands at 15%.
Dhaka logged 5,234 cases, the highest among the divisions followed by Chittagong with 2,047 cases, Khulna with 1,639, and Rajshahi with 1,269.
On the other hand, another 8,395 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 905,807. The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.61%.
Vaccination
In the 24 hours till Thursday morning, 212 people received a second dose of Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, taking the total to 4,296,073. Meanwhile, a little over 1.525 million people received the first dose of the vaccine and are awaiting the second dose.
Additionally, 132,604 people received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine during the same period, taking the total to 505,230, while 2,259 people received the second dose till Thursday. Meanwhile, 6,267 people were administered the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the total to 42,833.
Also, 39,325 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine taking the total number to 66,405.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4,077,216 lives across the world and infected more than 189,334,649 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 172,893,077 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
