Crackdown begins: Over 1300 arrested across the country

Law enforcing agencies in a countrywide drive arrested about 1300 people mainly of the opposition parties in last 24 hours till Friday night.
The detainees included activists of the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islam, fugitive convicts in different cases, local drug dealers and addicts.
The nationwide crackdown mission began on Thursday night and it will continue for about a week against the criminals and wrongdoers.
As part of the drive, the number of check posts and searches has been increased in different intersections and key points of the capital and other cities and towns.
As part thereof, Police arrested 162 people in eight upazilas of Rangpur, said Abdullah Al Farukh, Acting Superintendent of Police (SP).
 A number of cases, including sabotage cases, are pending against them under Terrorism Prevention Act, he said.
Sources said, Police arrested 87 people in Kushtia, 47 in Jhenaidah, 181 in Sylhet, 163 in Dinajpur, 27 in Nilphamari, 45 in Satkhira, 46 in Rajshahi, 53 in Lakshmipur, 45 in Magura, 97 in Tangail, 57 in Narail, 63 in Brahmanbaria, 42 in Natore, 46 in Feni, 93 in Jessore and 25 in Noakhali districts on Thursday night.
A K M Shahidur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General of Police Headquarters (Media and Planning) said that the real number of he arrested people could not be ascertained. It will be informed to the media today (Saturday).
Earlier, the crackdown decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque in the Police Headquarters on Thursday, five days after the murder of SP Babul Aktar’s wife Mahmuda Aktar Mitu in Chittagong broad light light.
