Over 11 lakh children living on streets

Speakers at a national seminar here on Monday called for bringing the street children into mainstream of the society through proper rehabilitation.
All should come forward to check the causes forcing children into street and preventive measures are needed so that the children are not compelled to lead an unwanted life, they said.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission Shishu Nagari organised the seminar titled, ‘Street children in Bangladesh: Perspective and duties’, at Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) auditorium at Dhanmondi in the city.

Tarik-Ul-Islam, Country Coordinator of KNH Germany Maruf Momtaj Rumi, deputy police commissioner of Victim Support Centre Shamima Begum and director of Bureau of Non-formal Education AFM Faruk, among others, addressed the seminar chaired by DAM President Quazi Rafiqul Alam.
While presenting the keynote paper, director (Public Relations) of DAM Quazi Ali Reza said the number of disadvantaged children in the country has increased to 1,144,754 in 2014 from 679,728 in 2004.
He mentioned poverty, family feud and lack of social awareness as the reasons which drove out the children of their homes.
Observing that financial problem stands in ways in bringing back poor children to their families, he stressed the need for providing necessary support to the poverty-stricken families in this regard.
Quazi Ali Reza also suggested adopting a child-friendly policy to build up child-sensitive society and make the country free from street children.
Depicting the horrific condition of the street children, the speakers said many of them are now engaged in different anti-social activities, and stressed the importance of addressing the issue to make better future for the disadvantaged children.
