An outlawed party leader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore district early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Saiful Shikari,35, son of Mohan Shikari, a resident of Shangkarpasha village of the upazila. Five policemen also sustained injuries during the gun battle.
Khabir Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Abhaynagar Police Station, said on secret information, a team
of police arrested Saiful from Shangkarpasha village on Tuesday night.
Later, based on information given by Saiful, police conducted a drive in Shashanghat area of the village to recover arms in dead of the night.
Sensing the presence of police, a group of extremists belonging to Saiful’s party opened fire on the law enforces, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
Saiful was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his party associates managed to flee the scene. Saiful was killed in his associates’ firing, the OC added.
He was wanted in several cases including for killing and robbery, said Khabir. Police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police also recovered one pipe gun and two rounds of bullet from the spot.
