The authority of Jahangirnagar University (JU) welcomed the first year students of the university under academic session 2015-2016 at Jahir Raihan auditorium on the campus on Wednesday.
JU registrar Abu Bakar Siddique placed the students to the deans of six faculties and directors of two institutes while the deans of the faculties and directors of the institutes received their respective students.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Farzana Islam presided over the programme while the Chairman of Bangladesh University Grants Commission Professor Abdul Mannan addressed the function as the chief guest.
Director of JU Student Welfare and Counseling Center Prof Dr. Rasheda Akhter delivered welcome address while Pro-VC Prof Dr. Abul Hossain, Treasurer Prof Dr. Abul Khair and proctor Prof Dr. Tapan Kumar Shaha addressed the function, among others.
Addressing the function, Prof Abdul Mannan said that the students enter into the ocean of knowledge through the orientation programme. You have to be qualified by gathering knowledge from this ocean.
‘You (students) have to learn from our glorious history of liberation war and to be self-determined in making decision. Because our determination was only force to achieve the independence against Pakistani occupiers in 1971’, he added.
He also urged the students to follow the rules and regulations of the university although they are different from each other by religion, culture and socio-economic background. Mannan also asked the students to work for implementing the vision 2021 announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Over 2500 new students joined the orientation reception.
