A day-long teachers’ training on ethics education – the first ever of its kind – was held at Hazrat Shah Ai Model High School at Mirpur in the capital recently, says a press release. The objectives of the training were to brief the teachers about quality education, humanity, moral values and ethical codes in our daily life which they will impart to the students of their school. Divided into different thematic areas, the training projected the relationships between law and ethics, religion and ethics, education and ethics, environment and ethics, livelihood and ethics and ethics in daily life. The sessions were conducted by former Chairman of Human Rights Commission Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, Associate Prof of Daffodil International University Syed Mizanur Rahman Raju, Principal Sheikh Saeed Ali, Senior Journalist Chinmoy Mutsuddi and Saifuzzaman Rana and Kazi Ali Reza of the Center for Ethics Education. A special Ethics Diary for the students, developed by the Center for Ethics Education, and a Manual for the teachers were also introduced in the workshop. Jointly organized by the Center for Ethics Education (CEE) and Hazrat Shah Ali Model High School, the training was attended by 38 teachers .CEE is a joint venture of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and the North American Bangladeshi Islamic Community (NABIC), says a press release.
College Education Dev Project (CEDP)
University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh Chairman Professor Dr. Kazi Shahidullah yesterday said that teaching is not a profession for becoming rich, rather it is a profession for building the nation , says a press release. “Morality, dedication and commitment are highly needed to become a teacher. People in this profession should come by choice. Only the best candidates with right mental frame should get the job,” he said. UGC Chairman made the remarks while addressing a programme of College Education Development Project (CEDP) as the Chief Guest. Professor Kazi Shahidullah called upon the college authorities not to appoint wrong people in the recruitment process. “We have to suffer for a long term if disqualified and unskilled people are recruited,” he observed. He said that UGC is concerned about the quality of country’s tertiary education. “Quality education is very important for us and we are trying to improve this situation.”
The UGC Chairman also said that there is mismatch between the actual knowledge acquired and grade received by the students in their exam results. He also said “we have many students but they don’t have the required knowledge and skills to get proper jobs due to lack of qualified teachers. “It is a teachers’ problem as they are not properly trained. The situation will not improve until teachers’ quality improves,” he added. Dr. Ferdous Zaman, Director of Planning and Development Division, UGC, Dr. AKM Mokhlesur Rahman, Project Director of CEDP and Dr. Mokhlesur Rahman, Senior Operation’s Officer, World Bank, among others, were present, says a press release .
