Dristi
The 23rd fruit festival with the exhibition of over 50 seasonal local verities organised by Dristi, a cultural organisation was held at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University on Friday. Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah joined the festival as the chief guest. While speaking Fazle Rabbi urged the guardians to introduce their children with local fruits like mango, blackberry, jackfruit and guava as these contain huge nutrition than the foreign ones. The festival was attended, among others, by Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Malek, Shishu Academy Chairman and noted novelist Selina Hossain, Swadhin Bangla Betar singer Bulbul Mahlanbis and Gyan O Srijanshil Prakashak Samity President Osman Goni. Like previous years, the 23rd fruit festival featured plantation of saplings of fruit-bearing trees, distribution of fruits among destitute children, drawing competition, entertaining guests and cultural function.
Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad
A post-budget discussion organised by Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad was held in the Roundtable Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city’s Segunbagicha on Friday. Awami League Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud was present as the chief guest. While speaking Hasan said like the previous years, BNP came up with a rhetoric reaction over the national budget of 2016-17 financial year without going through the budget speech of the Finance Minister. Calling upon BNP leadership to express constructive criticism after going through the budget, he said, “Like a group of members of the civil society, BNP used to criticise the budget terming it as ‘overambitious’ as soon as it was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad.” The Awami League leader said overambitious budgets were implemented over the past seven years and it would be implemented this year too. Former Permanent Representative of Bangladesh at the United Nations Dr AKM Abdul Momen attended the discussion as the special guest. Leader of the organisation Md Shahdat Hossain presided over the programme.
