Anti-Tobacco Alliance
Activists of the Anti-Tobacco Alliance including Progga urged the government for imposing more tax on tobacco products in the budget of 2016-17 fiscal year.
Demanding to remove price tiers of cigarettes and bidis, they urged the government to impose 70 percent of tax as retail price of all brands of cigarettes and 40 percent tax on bidis. The anti-tobacco group came up with their nine-point demand at a press conference held in the Jatiya Press Club in the city recently.
They said the most effective way to reduce tobacco use is to raise its price through increasing tax on all kinds of tobacco and tobacco products.
Progga and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance and other anti-tobacco organizations arranged the pre-budget media briefing.
Founder Chairman of National Heart Foundation and National Professor Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Malik was the chief guest of the event, while co-convener of Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance Nadia Kiron presented the key-note paper.
