Nat’l Legal Aid Services Organisation
The 35th meeting of the National Legal Aid Services Organisation (NLASO) was held in the city. In the programme held on Sunday Law Minister Anisul Huq was present as the chief guest. Speaking at a media briefing Anisul said from now people who annually earn less than Taka 2.50 lakh could avail the free legal aid. The minister said the others who would get the facility are people with disabilities with annual income of less than Taka four lakh and gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters with annual income of less than Taka 4.25 lakh. “Legal Aid Services Act, 2000, was formulated because of the earnest will of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to provide free legal assistance to insolvent justice seekers and the present government is very sincere to implement this law,” he added. Earlier, people with annual income of less than Taka 1.50 lakh were entitled to the free legal aid at the Supreme Court and people, whose annual income was less than Taka one lakh, could get the opportunity at lower courts. The function was attended, among others, by Law Secretary Abu Saleh SK Md Zahirul Haque and Director of the organisation
Zafrul Hasan.
Citizens for Good Governance
A discussion marking International Day of No Violence-2017 organised jointly by Citizens for Good Governance and The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB), Rajshahi unit in association with Democracy International, USAID and UKAID was held at Shaheb Bazaar crossing in Rajshahi recently. In the programme the speakers said collective efforts of law-enforcers and community leaders could be effective means of eradicating all sorts of violence, terrorism and militancy. President of the organisation Piar Baksha presided over the event. The speakers said that the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is determined to root out terrorism and militancy in any form with collective efforts of all quarters. ‘No More Violence, No More Militancy- Come Forward towards Building Our Country of Unity and Harmony’ was the slogan of the event. The speakers said all concerned quarters should supplement the government efforts towards freeing the nation from the ills of militancy and terror attacks.
