A 15-member team of the National Drug Regulatory Authority will visit Korea to partake in Korea International Cooperation Agency’s (KOICA) 3rd year fellowship programme on Pharmaceutical Safety Management, says a press release. The pharmaceutical industry of Bangladesh holds the second leading position after the country’s robust RMG sector. It has been declared as a thrust sector by the Government of Bangladesh capable to produce about 98% medicine of its local demand. Moreover, it meets a large number of the foreign demand as well exporting medicine to almost 140 countries. KOICA has been supporting the pharmaceutical safety of Bangladesh through its capacity building fellowship program titled “Pharmaceutical Safety and Regulatory Affairs Management” since 2015. The program is a three year tailor made training especially designed for Bangladesh. The principal objective is to establish pharmaceutical safety and regulation management strategies through understanding of the pharmaceutical safety and regulation of Korea and to strengthen cooperation in pharmaceutical regulation management between Bangladesh and Korea. With the completion of KOICA’s capacity building fellowship program this year, a total of 45 Directorate General Drug Administration (DGDA) officials will have received hands-on training from Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in Korea. Given the significance of pharmaceutical industry for the economic development of Bangladesh, it is essential that Bangladesh enhances its regulatory system to further boost the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

Ms. Preeti Singh, Head, South East Asia, Wadhwani Foundation, a US-based organisation called on Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC at the latter’s office yesterday. Dr Md. Khaled, Secretary, UGC was present during the meeting. Khandoker Abu Jafor Md. Saleh, Programme Manager, Bangladesh, Wadhwani Foundation, assisted Ms. Preeti Singh during the meeting. Ms. Preeti Singh said that Wadhwani Foundation is willing to introduce entrepreneurship programme in higher educational institutions of Bangladesh for enhancing the entrepreneurial skills of the university students of the country. Welcoming the delegation at his office, Professor Mannan termed the proposal placed by Ms Preeti Singh as positive and said that it will help for development of entrepreneurial skills of students of higher educational institutions of Bangladesh and play a vital role for socio-economic development of the country.

Terming Bangladesh as one of the vulnerable countries due to global climate change, speakers at a workshop on Wednesday called for taking up steps to address the risks and vulnerability of the children due to the climate change, says a press release. The children are the most vulnerable section of our society. Disasters always heighten their vulnerabilities in many ways and lead to an increased risk of neglect, separation, abandonment, abuse, economic exploitation and violence, they said. The made the remarks while addressing the workshop for sharing a draft Action Plan on Child Centered Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city yesterday. The speakers stressed on developing action plan for child-centred DRR and climate change adaptation for protecting the rights of the children. The Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) of Ministry of Planning, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) and UNICEF jointly organised the workshop. Prof. Shamsul Alam, Member (Senior Secretary) of the General Economic Division of Planning Commission, attended the workshop as Chief Guest. Mohammad Mofizul Islam, Secretary, IMED of Planning Ministry, Muzib-Ul-Ferdous, project director, IMED of Planning Ministry, Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, Director (P&D), Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Sheema Sen Gupta, Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF-Bangladesh, spoke at the programme with Dr. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director of BCAS, in the chair.
Green University of Bangladesh
Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, Vice Chancellor, Green University of Bangladesh presented key note at the 7th World Edu Summit held at Bengalore, India recently. The theme of this 7th summit was ‘Sustainable Development Goal: Education’. Over 150 participants, scholars all over India as well as from Bangladesh, USA, and UAE, attended the summit. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, leading economist of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest. Prof Dr. Golam Samdani Fakir was speaking on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with special focus on SDG 4, which touches on education. His presentation was highly appreciated by the audience and organizer of the summit. There were three interactive sessions: a) Sustainable Development Goal- Education, b) Inclusive Quality Education and Life Long Learning, and c) Education in Poverty Alleviation and Global Peace. For each session there were designated speakers and followed by questions and answers. The participants raised many important issues on challenges in higher education, says a press release.
