Bangabandhu Gabeshana Parishad
A rich tribute paid to the great Bengali leader Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy at a ceremony organised by Bangabandhu Gabeshana Parishad was held in the city on Friday marking his 125th birth anniversary. The leaders and activists of the parishad placed wreaths on the grave of Suhrawardy, one of the great leaders of the sub-continent at Doyel Chattar in the city. A discussion was also held on the occasion on the premises adjacent to the grave. Suhrawardy, former Chief Minister of united Bengal in 1946 and Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1956, was born on September 8, 1892 in Medinipore, West Bengal and died on December 5, 1963. Born into a prominent Bengali Muslim family, Suhrawardy was educated at Oxford and joined the Swaraj Party of Chittaranjan Das upon returning to India in 1921. The function was attended, among others, by President of the parishad Lion M Gani Miah Babul, its Vice-President M Nurul Islam Talukder and its Publication Secretary Advocate Khan Chaman-e-Elahi.
Bangladesh United Buddhists’ Forum
A rally organised by Bangladesh United Buddhists’ Forum was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city on Friday. Chief Coordinator of the forum Ashok Barua read out a written statement. Barua urged the Myanmar government to stop the current spate of violence on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state. “A vested quarter is using social media to mislead the common people against the peace-loving innocent Buddhists in Bangladesh over the Rohingya crisis,” he said. Barua said the people of Bangladesh never support communal and violent acts. The forum leader urged the Myanmar government and its people to handle the issue in non-violent way. “We always support peaceful coexistence,” he added. He also said representatives of the forum will submit a memorandum to Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka today for a permanent solution on Rohingya issue in Rakhine state and this copy will be sent to all concerned international forums including the United Nations local office.
