Bangladesh Muktijoddha Welfare Trust distributed Taka 296 crore among the families of martyred freedom fighters and the injured and gallantry award winning freedom fighters as allowances and honorariums in fiscal 2016-17. The information was disclosed at the 18th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Liberation War Affairs Ministry at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday. “A total of Taka 296 crore and 9.13 lakh was distributed among the injured, martyred and gallantry award winning freedom fighters as honorarium and medical allowances in fiscal 2016-17 while the amount was Taka 150 crore and 85.48 lakh in 2015-16 fiscal,” the meeting was told. Presided over by Standing Committee Chairman AB Tazul Islam, the meeting was attended by committee members Ekramul Rahim, Md Afsarul Amin, Swapon Bhattachariya and Kamrul Layla Joli, said an official release. The over activities of Muktijoddha Welfare Trust were discussed in the meeting.

A memorial meeting on AN Mahfuza Khatun Baby Moudud, a former lawmaker, journalist and litterateur, will be held tomorrow. Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) will organise the meeting at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 3rd death anniversary of her. Baby Moudud, who had been suffering from cancer, breathed her last at United Hospital in the city on July 25, 2014. She was 66. She was born in Kolkata in 1948. Moudud obtained her honours and masters degree in Bangla from Dhaka University in 1971.In 1969, she took part in the mass upsurge and was engaged in several activities with Begum Sufia Kamal in 1971 to acquire support in favour of the country’s Independence. Moudud worked as a journalist in The Daily Sangbad, BBC, The Daily Ittefaq, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), weekly-magazine Bichitra and online news portal bdnews24.com.She was elected MP to a reserved seat for women in the ninth parliament.
