Mr. Andrew Newton, Deputy Director, British Council Bangladesh called on UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan at the latter’s office yesterday . M Md. Towhidur Rahman, Head of International Higher Education (IHE), Bangladesh and Regional Manager, South Asia Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, British Council assisted him. During the call on, UGC Chairman briefed Andrew Newton about the overall education system from primary to tertiary level of Bangladesh. He also projected the functions and activities of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh to Mr Netwon. He observed that UGC has been relentlessly working for expansion and enhancement of quality of higher education of Bangladesh since its inception. He also emphasized that the current challenge in the education sector is enhancing and maintaining the quality of higher education in the country. Prof Mannan, with regard to activities of British Council, opined that British Council Bangladesh has a rich collection of books in all branches of human sciences, which is significantly contributing to the development of knowledge and skills in Bangladesh. He further said that UGC and British Council Bangladesh are joinly working on higher education to promot the quality development of higher education and UGC always feels comfortable to work with British Council.
National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways
At least 2,297 people, including 292 women and 315 children, were killed and 5,480 others were injured in 1,983 road accidents in first six months in the ongoing year, says a press release. The fatal accidents took place on the several highways and national, inter-district and regional roads between January 1 and June 30 across the country. The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), a non-government organization, on Saturday revealed the information in its regular monthly survey and observation report, said a NCPSRR press release. The report was prepared on the basis of 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portals and news agencies, the release said. According to the report, 333 people, including 34 women and 42 children, lost lives and 632 others received injuries in 265 mishaps in the last month. Among thedeceased a total of 120 people, including 11 women and 15 children, were killed and 226 others injured in between June 23 and 30 during the 8-day EID holidays. Due to better transport management and strict monitoring of the authorities concerned the accidents and casualties had decreased in this eid-ul-fitr in comparison with previous years, the observation said. But the road mishaps and casualties had increased in last six months in comparison with the same period of the last year, according to the NCPSRR report.
