President and General Secretary of Bangladesh Students’ Union GM Gilani Shuva and Liton Nandi respectively in a joint statement on Wednesday have expressed grave concerned over the deaths owing to landslides in the hill regions. They expressed deep condolence over the painful incidents and urged the government to give adequate compensation to the victims of landslides. They also urged the authority concerned to take necessary initiatives for the rehabilitation of people who are living in the risky areas of the hill region. They urged the government to stop felling of trees in the hill region, side by side, they urged the government to take necessary steps to stop building dwelling houses in the risky hill areas to avoid landslides.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between WaterAid Bangladesh andBangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) was signed on the 13th instant at the conference room of Statistics & Informatics Division, BBS for conducting the Bangladesh National Hygiene Survey-2017. Md Amir Hossain, Director General of BBS, and Dr Md Khairul Islam, Country Director of WaterAid, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations in presence of KM Mozammel Hoq, Secretary (Statistic & Informatics Division) of Planning Ministry. The main objective of the survey is to monitor the progress of the Hygiene related indicators which were connected to SDGs and Seventh Five Years Plan (SFYP). The survey will aim to find out current status of household toilet facilities, water sources, food and environmental hygiene. Starting from June 2017 to September 2018 the survey will be conducted both in urban and rural areas to assess hygiene knowledge, practices and facilities including hand washing with soap, cleanliness and menstrual hygiene management around households, schools, hospitals, restaurants and with traditional birth attendants. Amir Hossain said, “This survey will help us to measure the current hygiene situation which will helpful for developing further planning in the sector.” Dr Khairul Islam highlighted that the country is moving forward through collective effort of all. The survey will play a vital role in the development of overall public health system and contribute in the attainment of government’s development vision.
