Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal
A rally organised jointly by Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Ganotantrik Bam Morcha was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city on Monday. In the programme the speakers demanded withdrawal of price hike of essential commodities including rice. They also demanded withdrawal of increased price of gas. The leaders of the organisations bitterly criticized attack on indigenous people and torching their houses at Longadu in Rangamati. The leaders called upon all to be united against the culprits involved in the heinous crimes and demanded exemplary punishment to them. The function was addressed, among others, by leaders of the organisations Saiful Haque, Rajekuzzaman Ratan, Shuvrangshu Chakravarty, Zonaed Saki, Prof Abdus Sattar and Aniruddha Das Anjan. Leader of CPB Sazzad Zahir Chandan moderated the event. A procession brought out by the organisations paraded different streets of the city to meet its demands.

A seminar on ‘Connecting People to Nature’ organised by Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) was held in its auditorium in the city’s Khamarbari on Monday marking the World Environment Day. Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju was present as the chief guest. While speaking Manju laid emphasis on collective efforts from all nations in curbing environmental degradation and reducing carbon emission to reduce global warming. “No nation can deal environmental degradation alone, we need to face it collectively with holistic and firm committed approach,” he added. The minister said the environmental degradation is a comprehensive issue and all stakeholders related to nature need a coordinated effort to check it. “The world environment has been changing in a fast pace. If we would like to survive, we have to adapt with this changing scenario,” he said. About the environmental hazards due to brick fields Monju said, “No doubt, we have to ban it but before doing it we should give them (users) an alternative to build houses.” The function was addressed, among others, by Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary of Awami League M Delwar Hossain and Convener of World Environment Day Celebration Committee Prof Dr M Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan. President of the institution AMM Saleh presided over the event.
