A rally organised by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Palton Thana Unit was held in front of the city’s Shantinagar Bazaar on the 2nd instant. In the programme the leaders of the organisation bitterly criticized the price spiral of the essential commodities. The speakers also blamed the failure of city corporations in mosquito eradication drive. They demanded of the government to withdraw increased price of gas and keep control the prices of essentials. The leaders also demanded rehabilitation of hawkers before eviction and payment of salaries, festival bonus and other allowances of workers before the Eid-ul-Fitr. The rally was addressed, among others, by Secretary of CPB Central Committee Joly Talukder, General Secretary of CPB, Dhaka Committee Dr Sajedul Haque Rubel, General Secretary of CPB, Palton Thana Committee Tridib Saha and students’ leader Kafiluddin Mohammad Shanto. The event was presided over by the leader of the organisation Murshiqul Islam.
BD Mobile Phone Importers Assoc
The leaders of Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers Association (BMPIA) in a post budget press conference held at a hotel in the city on Saturday demanded to the government to keep the existing tax on foreign-made mobile handsets through withdrawing another 5 percent tax imposed in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2017-18. “The proposed tax structure will encourage the import of foreign-made handsets in unauthorised channel, resulting the government will loss huge amounts of revenue and importers will face hurdle to run businesses following an uneven competition. They urged the government to continue the existing tax structure for next fiscal as the establishment of assembling industry is time consuming with developing skill manpower. Welcoming the move by the government to flourish local assembling industry, they added, “we are optimistic that we can manufacture 90 percent of the total sale of the handsets in locally if the tax on backward linkage equipment is fixed 5 percent for next three fiscals.” The programme was addressed, among others, by BMPIA President Ruhul Alam Al Mahbub and its Secretary Rejwanul Huq.
