Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM)
Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) has been awarded with the 2015 Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND) Prize for its outstanding contribution in the field of alleviation of unemployment among youths . DAM President Kazi Rafiqul Alam received the prize at Assembly Hall of United Nations Office at Geneva on April 20, 2017. The award was given for implementing projects by NGOs. DAM is the only recipient of 2015 award – in this category – for its Technical and Vocational Education and Training Project. With its prize money of $ 150000, the Prize was announced on 29 March 2016 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, by the Prize Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr Ahmed Mohammed Ali, President , Islamic Development Bank Group, on behalf o Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, President , AGFUND. DAM has been implementing technical and vocational skills training programme for poverty alleviation of the unskilled population for more than 16 years now through its nine vocational training institutions. The Prize Committee membership comprised a number of renowned international figures representing the world regions, namely the Queen Sofia , Executive President of Queen Sofia Foundation, Mrs Mercedes Menafra , President of Honour, HECHO ACA – Todos Por Uruguay, Dr Ahmed Mohammed Ali, President , IDB Group, Prof Mohammad Yunus, Founder of Grameen Bank and Noble Laureate and Dr Y S Abdulai, former DG of OPEC Fund for OFID .
National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways
The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) on Saturday demanded to deploy army to stop the ongoing disorder in road transport sector and to refrain the important persons of the state from being in leadership of non-government organizations. Reading out the written speech in an urgent press conference at Mukti Bhaban at Purana Paltan in the city , the National Committee General Secretary Asish Kumar Dey also placed 23 other recommendations to bring order in public transport sector. He suggested to engage army in the capital’s traffic management to reduce traffic jam and stop faulty transports, deploying army personnel in bus terminals to save the transport owners from being victim of toll collection, formulation of law to refrain the constitutional or state’s very important persons from leadership of transport workers’ or owners’ organizations, scrapping the system to lease out the buses of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation to non-government institutions, adding adequate buses in BRTC fleet to strengthen and activate the Corporation. The National Committee general secretary urged the government to import needed taxicabs, introduce ‘education service buses in the city for carrying students and their guardians, conducting BRTA checks and mobile courts round the year, training for the transport workers to reduce road accidents.
